Yesterday, nine of us met over Zoom to discuss our book project and our next steps. We have chosen five final books and have created individual and interesting curriculums. For each one, we have pre-reading discussion prompts and questions and during or post-reading prompts questions and activities. Our five final choices are "My Daddy" by MLK Jr, "Ambitious Girl" by Meena Harris, "A Kid's Book About Racism" by Jelani Memory, "The Youngest Marcher: The Story of Audrey Faye Hendricks, a Young Civil Rights Activist" by Cynthia Levinson, and "The Undefeated" by Kwame Alexander. We are excited by our list and cannot wait to put our plans into action! In the next couple of weeks, we are having a meeting with NEA and will be reaching out to schools all over Vermont.
In other news, we will likely be having a Welcome Meeting on March 13th, this is subject to change but we hope to invite everyone who is interested to join our meeting and get to know us and what we do! Okay, we are here, this is our first blog post ever! We have a lot going in right now, so let's try to catch up.

At this week's meeting, we will be working on our Books Project. Right now, we are working specifically on having books and a curriculum for younger students. We have narrowed down a lot of books into our top favorites. The books had to go through a very strongly critiqued process, where we research the author, their background, the story behind the book, etc. This week we finalize our ten or so favorites and move forward with researching activities that could either be worked the current curriculum or be used to create a new one.
Our overarching goal for this project is to have a wide variety of books, and curriculums to go along with them, that are diverse and anti-racist for all VT students K-12. We want to start educating people as early as possible to prevent internalized racism in students of color and teach white students how to be anti-racist. Internalized racism is '-the personal conscious or subconscious acceptance of the dominant society's racist views, stereotypes, and biases of one's ethnic group. It gives rise to patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that result in discriminating, minimizing, criticizing, finding fault, invalidating, and hating oneself while simultaneously valuing the dominant culture.'"
